Waswo X. Waswo retro-spective
I see this as a retrospective of sorts, looking back over a body of work that spans from 2007 until the present. We've titled the exhibition "retro-spective", breaking up the word with a hyphen to emphasize "retro" (old-fashioned) and "spective" (the concept of looking). I fully embrace a certain element of nostalgia in my work, which is quite a daring thing to do when the very word "nostalgia" is thought of as a negative in the world of contemporary art. But for me we must always look backwards as well as forwards, and nostalgia does play a role in helping us remember the positive in the past that we may have forgotten in our present, and lose to total obliteration in our future. So for me nostalgia becomes just another tool for making contemporary art. Of course I hope my images move beyond just nostalgia and take on a contemporary resonance as well.
