Born in 1936 at Parola, Jalgaon District. He studied and received a diploma in Art from the J.J.School of Art in 1959. He is one of the most innovative artists who is at ease in the world of painting equally as he is in the field of film making. His most influential teacher was Late Shankar Paliskar who restricted him with the use of colour right in his early years of experimentation that made him examine the versatility of the colour black. Vasant Wankhede has been exploring with the medium of fabric from the year 1990, the first artist that dared to envisage a journey without pigment.

The works are meditative, spiritual and ethereal. The subtle works reflect the vibrations of an ascetic. The works make the viewer look inward, calm our senses and take us to a level of tranquility. Layers of the fabric create an absorbing ground that gives a feeling of infinity.
